Toner adjusts the tone of your hair colour without changing how light or dark it is. It is the step that turns brassy yellow blonde into a soft beige, or dull faded colour into something that looks freshly done. If you have ever wondered why salon blonde looks so much more polished than box-dye blonde, toner is usually the answer.

## How toner works

When hair is lightened, it passes through warm stages: red, orange, then yellow. Lightener rarely removes every trace of that warmth, which is why blonde can look brassy.

Toner deposits small amounts of the opposite tone to cancel the warmth out. Violet tones knock out yellow, blue tones knock out orange. It is colour theory, applied to your head.

> **Worth knowing:** toner is not just for blondes. Brunettes use it to keep colour rich rather than flat, and silver and grey hair uses it to stay bright instead of yellowing.

## When you need a toner

Your situation

What toner does

Blonde turning yellow or brassy

Neutralises warmth back to a clean blonde

Balayage or highlights looking faded

Refreshes the tone between colour visits

Grey or silver hair looking yellowed

Restores a bright, clean silver

Brunette colour gone dull

Adds richness and depth back

## How long does toner last?

Toner fades gradually over four to eight weeks, depending on how often you wash your hair and the products you use. You will notice warmth slowly creeping back rather than a sudden change.

To make it last longer:

- Wash hair in cool or lukewarm water rather than hot
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo
- Add a purple or blue shampoo once a week if you are blonde
- Keep heat styling moderate and always use heat protection

## Frequently asked questions

### Does toner damage your hair?

Toner is a gentle, low-commitment service. It uses little to no peroxide and no ammonia, so it does not lighten or structurally change the hair. Of all the colour services on the menu, it is among the kindest to your hair.

### Can toner make my hair darker?

Slightly, yes. Because toner deposits pigment, hair can look a touch deeper immediately afterwards. This settles within a wash or two, and your stylist will choose a toner that keeps you at the brightness you want.

### Do I need a toner after highlights or balayage?

Almost always, yes. Lightening reveals warmth, and toner is what refines that warmth into the final shade you asked for. It is the difference between "lightened hair" and "finished colour".

### Can I just use purple shampoo instead?

Purple shampoo helps maintain a toner, but it cannot replace one. It deposits a small amount of pigment on the surface, while a salon toner gives an even, reliable result that lasts for weeks.
